Creating a Safe and Respectful Set

Intimacy Coordination for cinema

Over the years, my experience across different areas of the film industry—combined with in-depth studies on gender issues (including feminist and queer theory, gender-based violence, and social norms)—led me to embrace a profession that is both new and essential: Intimacy Coordination.

I collaborate with directors, cast, and crew to balance artistic vision with the consent and comfort of all people involved, contributing to the cultural shift that the audiovisual industry increasingly needs.

What an Intimacy coordinator Does and Why It Matters

The role of an Intimacy Coordinator is to create a safe environment for performers and crew during the most vulnerable scenes (involving physical contact, nudity, or simulated sex), ensuring that directorial vision is respected while safeguarding the autonomy of everyone involved.

Often misunderstood as a role of censorship or control, intimacy coordination is actually centered on consent:

  • Consent is essential—not just on set, but in everyday life.
  • Safe spaces lead to more authentic storytelling.
  • Cinema shapes our cultural models and imagination, and can promote more respectful, conscious representations of intimacy.

When your boundaries are healthy, you are clear about your needs, you say no when needed, you respect other people’s boundaries, and you share yourself in ways that feel comfortable to you.Tawwab, Nedra Glover. The Set Boundaries Workbook
